Issues: The Environment
The greatest threat to the County's environment comes from the pollution caused by our notorious traffic congestion. Gridlock has mushroomed under the tenure of the current Board of Supervisors. But the Board has responded to this scourge in a curious way: with more and more intense development.
Charlie will end this practice of uncontrolled development. He will require that new development be planned in such a manner that traffic is not adversely impacted.
Additionally, chronic over-development and urbanization in Fairfax is stripping away what little tree cover is left. This not only increases air pollution but has also had devastating effects on area watersheds that impact the Chesapeake Bay. Silt from chronic overbuilding around Vienna and Tysons Corner was a major factor in last year's flooding of the Cameron Run stream that severely damaged 160 homes in the Huntington section of Fairfax.
Runoff and flooding has become a major problem for ordinary homeowners throughout the County. Dense residential construction, and trailers and modular units at schools now replace green space that once absorbed rainwater.
Charlie will fight to preserve what green space is left.
